You could check the quality of the engine oil, because if the leak is coming from the water pump, it will turn the engine's oil milky. If it's a manual, then there's possibly a head gasket problem although usually these can be detected by exhaust gas bubbling out the radiator cap (and should be visible in the coolant bottle while the engine is running). Apart from getting the gearbox rebuilt (consider just buying one from a wreck if this has happened) you should replace the radiator and fit an external transmission cooler.

If you're still driving the car around, after driving it pop the gearbox dipstick and look at the quality of the oil - milky oil means it's your tranny cooler. it can also be caused by a faulty transmission cooler.

Oil in coolant reservoir problems cracked#
It seems like a minor but this minor problem can be a big problem. the most common reasons why you have oil in the coolant reservoir is because of a blown head gasket or a cracked oil/coolant heat exchanger. Also check your cooling system for over pressure with the engine running. Check the engine oil for water as well, it will manifest as white sludge on the dipstick and on the inside of the filler cap. The engine can be flushed, but the gearbox will likely have coolant damage in the valve body and clutches. Little Leakage of cooling system lubricant can create this problem. Oil in coolant usually means a blown head gasket but 140000 km seems low for that unless youve been abusing it. Trouble is, it works the other way too - coolant will have found its way into the auto transmission. There aren’t many other possibilities in this situation you, unfortunately, may well have a blown head gasket. Although now is not the moment to panic, a reality check is also necessary. My truck threw the code p0128 which is coolant therm temp to low.

Is yours an auto? If so, it might be the transmission cooler in the radiator has corroded and allowed the auto trans fluid to enter the coolant. All the signs are pointing towards a blown head gasket. Oil in coolant tank 11062 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by ACM, S Schild09 Discussion Starter
